More incumbents are ineligible to run in 2026 due to term limits than in 2024, 2022, and 2018


Fifty-seven state executive incumbents, including 15 governors, are unable to run for re-election in 2026 due to term limits. Overall, incumbents in 15 different state executive offices are ineligible to run for re-election in 2026. 

California has the most state executive officials term-limited in the 2026 elections, with eight term-limited incumbents, followed by Ohio and Oklahoma with six each. The Democratic and Republican parties are both impacted by term limits, with 26 Democrats and 29 Republicans unable to run.
