This year’s filing deadline for candidates running for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Mexico was Feb. 3, 2026.
One primary — the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District — is contested in New Mexico this year, tying with 2024 and 2016 for the fewest contested primaries. There was one contested primary in 2024, two in 2022, four in 2020, three in 2018, one in 2016, and two in 2014.

The candidates running in a contested primary this year do not include any of the three incumbents — all Democrats — seeking re-election. Only one incumbent has faced a primary challenge in every cycle since 2014, and that primary occurred in 2014.
This year is also the fifth time since 2014 that all incumbents are running for re-election. One district was open in 2020, and two were open in 2018.
Although its incumbent, Rep. Gabriel Vasquez (D), is not facing a primary challenger, the 2nd Congressional District has attracted the most candidates of any district in New Mexico this year. The candidates are Vasquez and two Republicans.
Overall, seven candidates — three Democrats and four Republicans — are running for New Mexico’s three congressional districts. That’s 2.3 candidates per district. There were 2.3 candidates per district in 2024, 2.7 in 2022, 6.3 in 2020, five in 2018, 2.3 in 2016, and 2.7 in 2014.
Candidates filed to run in the Republican and Democratic primaries in all three districts, meaning no districts are guaranteed to either party.
New Mexico and five other states — California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, and South Dakota — are holding U.S. House primaries on June 2, 2026.
In New Mexico, the winner of a primary election is the candidate who receives the greatest number of votes, even if they do not win more than 50% of votes cast.
