Sixteen Florida state legislative incumbents face primary contests in 2026, the third-fewest at any point since 2010. This is a 23% increase in the number of incumbents facing challengers compared to 2024.

Three of the contested incumbents are Democrats, and 13 are Republicans. All 16 are state representatives.
Florida has 55 contested state legislative primaries in 2026, up 22% from 2024.
Of these, there are 22 for Democrats and 33 for Republicans. For Democrats, this is up from 18 in 2024, a 22% increase. Contested Republican primaries are up 22% from 27 in 2024.

In total, 318 major party candidates filed to run. One hundred fifty-seven are Democrats, and 161 are Republicans. All 120 House seats and 20 of 40 Senate seats are up for election.
Thirty-four seats are open, meaning no incumbents filed. This means newcomers will make up at least 21% of the legislature next year. The average number of open seats each cycle from 2010 to 2024 was 42.
