Tanya Miller (D) and Brian Strickland (R) are running in the general election for attorney general of Georgia on Nov. 3. Incumbent Chris Carr (R) ran for governor of Georgia.
Political commentators have characterized Georgia's recent presidential and U.S. Senate elections as battlegrounds. In 2020, former President Joe Biden (D) won the state with 49.5% of the vote to President Donald Trump's (R) 49.3%. In 2021, Raphael Warnock (D) defeated incumbent Kelly Loeffler (R) 51.0%-49.0% in Georgia's special U.S. Senate runoff election. Jon Ossoff (D) defeated incumbent David Perdue (R) 50.6%-49.4% in Georgia's regular U.S. Senate runoff election. In 2024, Trump won the state with 50.7% of the vote to former Vice President Kamala Harris' 48.5%.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Greg Bluestein writes, "The suburban realignment and rise of split-ticket voters that made the state competitive are still in play. ... Trump reclaimed the state in 2024 by just 2 percentage points. Democrats could capture the governor’s office and other statewide posts they haven’t controlled in decades, and have an outside shot of flipping the Georgia House." Thurbert Baker (D) was Georgia's last Democratic attorney general, serving from 1997 to 2011. Georgia has had a Republican triplex since 2011.
Miller has represented the 62nd District in the Georgia House of Representatives since 2023. As of the election, Miller was the chair of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, founder of Miller Injury Trial Law, and general counsel to the Georgia Federation of Public Service Employees. Miller says, "Beyond ... supporting local enforcement with training and programs to help prevent and solve crimes, I will also uplift programs to divert nonviolent, first time offenders from our prison system, reduce recidivism and focus on putting formerly incarcerated citizens on the path to gainful employment and full participation in our democracy."
Strickland has represented the 42nd District in the Georgia Senate since 2025. He previously represented the 17th District from 2018 to 2025 and the 111th District in the Georgia House from 2013 to 2017. As of the election, Strickland was the chair of the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee and practiced law with Smith, Welch, Webb & White. Strickland says, "The Attorney General must actively confront violent crime, organized criminal networks, gangs, human trafficking, fentanyl distribution, consumer fraud, identity theft, elder abuse, and scams targeting vulnerable Georgians. My focus is on protecting victims, disrupting criminal networks, and ensuring our communities are safe."
