John McKinney and Marissa Roy are running in the nonpartisan election for Los Angeles City Attorney on November 3, 2026.
Incumbent Hydee Feldstein Soto finished third in the city's June 2nd primary. This was the first time in nearly 100 years that an incumbent Los Angeles city attorney failed to advance from a primary. Roy received 43% of the vote to McKinney's 29%, Feldstein Soto's 18%, and Aida Ashouri's 10%. The Los Angeles Times' Sonja Sharp and James Queally wrote that the primary was a referendum on Feldstein Soto, whose term they wrote had been "marked by exploding legal costs and the loss of support from the union for rank-and-file LAPD officers following a data breach that led to thousands of sensitive files being leaked online. Now, voters will have to decide which of Roy and McKinney’s competing visions is best suited to fix an office many saw as broken."
Although elections for the position are nonpartisan, McKinney and Roy are affiliated with the Democratic Party.
McKinney is a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County. He is campaigning on improving public safety, and his campaign website says he wants to address "repeat offenders who drive quality-of-life crime, addressing retail theft and organized shoplifting, prosecuting illegal firearms possession, and working closely with law enforcement to address dangerous activity like street racing and open-air drug markets." He is also campaigning on increasing the office's collaboration with neighborhoods, saying he supported "restarting the Neighborhood Prosecutor Program—an initiative ... that created a direct liaison between communities and the City Attorney’s Office." Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and State Treasurer Fiona Ma (D) endorsed McKinney.
Roy is a consumer protection attorney for the California Department of Justice. In her response to Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey, she said she wanted to address wage theft, and wrote, "When I was at the LA City Attorney’s Office, I took on wage theft and put tens of thousands of dollars each back in the pocket of workers ... I will continue to hold bad bosses accountable for stealing workers’ hard earned money." Roy also campaigned on improving conditions for tenants, writing she would "start a housing justice team that vigorously enforces tenant protections, so renters aren’t harassed or pushed out of housing by abusive landlords." The Democratic Socialists of Los Angeles and both of the state's U.S. senators, Adam Schiff (D) and Alex Padilla (D), endorsed Roy.
