Voters in four states decided abortion-related ballot measures in 2026. Here are the results and what they mean.
Of the three measures to establish a state right to abortion, two passed, and one was defeated. Missouri voters defeated a measure that would have repealed the constitutional right to reproductive freedom they approved in 2024 and prohibited abortion with limited exceptions.

Voters approved two measures and defeated two measures.
Measures to establish a right to abortion:
- Idaho Proposition 1: Defeated. Voters defeated a measure that would have established a statutory right to make private reproductive healthcare decisions, including abortion until fetal viability.
- Nevada Question 6: Approved. Voters approved a measure establishing a constitutional right to abortion until fetal viability and afterward when necessary to protect the mother’s life or health.
- Virginia Question 1: Approved. Voters approved a measure establishing a constitutional right to reproductive freedom, including abortion before the third trimester and afterward under specified circumstances.
Measure to repeal an existing constitutional right and prohibit abortion:
- Missouri Amendment 3: Defeated. Voters defeated a measure that would have repealed the constitutional right to reproductive freedom approved in 2024, prohibited abortion with exceptions, and prohibited certain surgical procedures and treatments for transgender minors. The proposed exceptions for rape and incest would have applied through 12 weeks of gestation.
How this year compares: Voters decided a record 11 abortion-related statewide measures in 2024. From 1970 through 2025, voters decided 65 abortion-related measures, approving 27 and defeating 38.
