Election results from Dec. 2, 2025


On Dec. 2, 2025, elections were held in six states for 17 offices. The following states held elections: Georgia, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.

Georgia:

In Georgia, elections took place for the Georgia House of Representatives, Atlanta City Council, and Atlanta Public Schools school board.

In the special general election runoff for Georgia House of Representatives District 106, Muhammad Akbar Ali (D) won with 947 votes, defeating Marqus Cole (D). The special general election was held on Nov. 4, and the filing deadline passed on Sept. 16. The election was called after Shelly Hutchinson (D) left office on Sept. 5. Hutchinson served from 2023 to 2025.

Entering the election, the Georgia House of Representatives had 79 Democrats and 98 Republicans. A majority in the chamber requires 91 seats.

Ballotpedia also covered local elections for the Atlanta City Council and the Atlanta Public Schools school board.

In the general election runoff for the Atlanta City Council, voters selected representatives for District 7 and District 11. Thomas Worthy won the race for District 7 with 1,569 votes, defeating Thad Flowers. Wayne Martin won the race for District 11 with 2,188 votes, defeating Nate Jester. The general election was on Nov. 4, and the filing deadline passed on Aug. 21. Atlanta’s population was 498,715 as of 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In the general election runoff for the Atlanta Public Schools school board, voters selected representatives for District 2, District 6, and At-Large Seat 8. Tony Mitchell won the race for District 2 with 1,098 votes, defeating Marlissa Crawford. Patreece Hutcherson won the race for District 6 with 2,476 votes, defeating Tolton Pace. Kaycee Brock won the race for At-Large Seat 8 with 9,937 votes, defeating Royce Mann. The general election was held on Nov. 4, and the filing deadline passed on Aug. 21. Atlanta Public Schools had an enrollment of 49,660 students for the 2023–2024 school year.

Maine: 

In Maine, a recall election to remove Select Board Member Rene Ouellet from the Freedom Select Board was defeated, with 60.7% voting against removal, according to unofficial election night results.

According to the Midcoast Villager, recall supporters alleged that Ouellet interfered with a pending real estate sale by discouraging a potential buyer. They collected 49 signatures, and Town Clerk Cynthia Abbott certified the recall petition for Ouellet on Oct. 6. In response to the recall effort, Ouellet said that he told the potential buyer that he was talking to them as a prospective neighbor, rather than a town official. Ouellet took office in 2025.

In our most recent recall report, covering January to June 2025, Ballotpedia tracked 158 recall efforts against 219 officials across 27 states. These totals marked the lowest number of officials targeted for recall at mid-year since 2020. As of that report, 21 officials had been removed from office via recall elections, and 12 resigned following the launch of recall campaigns.

Mississippi:

In Mississippi, special general election runoffs were held for State Senate District 24 and State Senate District 26.

Justin Pope won the special election for District 24 with 1,944 votes, defeating Curressia Brown. The general election was held on Nov. 4, and the filing deadline passed on Aug. 21. The seat became vacant after David Jordan resigned on June 30. Jordan served from 1993 to 2025.

Kamesha Mumford won the special election for District 26 with 3,711 votes, defeating Letitia Johnson. The general election was held on Nov. 4, and the filing deadline passed on Aug. 21. The seat became vacant after John Horhn (D) resigned on June 3 following his election as mayor of Jackson. Horhn served from 1994 to 2025.

Entering these elections, the Mississippi State Senate had 14 Democrats and 36 Republicans. A majority requires 27 seats. 

New Jersey:

In New Jersey, general election runoffs were held for local offices in Jersey City. The general election took place on Nov. 4, and filing deadlines passed on Aug. 21. Offices on the ballot included the mayor, three at-large city council seats, and the Ward A, B, C, and D council seats.

James Solomon won the general election runoff for mayor of Jersey City with 14,402 votes, defeating Jim McGreevey. Jersey City mayoral elections are officially nonpartisan. Media outlets have reported that Solomon is a Democrat.  Jersey City is the second-largest city in New Jersey and the 70th-largest city in the U.S. by population.

As of December 2025, Ballotpedia's Partisanship in United States municipal elections analysis found that 36 mayoral elections took place in the 100 largest U.S. cities by population and the 50 state capitals in 2025. Of those, 27 were nonpartisan, and nine were partisan.

Rhode Island:

In Rhode Island, a special general election was held for Providence City Council Ward 2. Jill Davidson (D) won with 660 votes, defeating Axel Brito (R). The Democratic primary was held on Nov. 4, and the Republican primary was canceled. The filing deadline passed on Sept. 26. The election was called after Helen Anthony (D) left office on Sept. 1. Anthony served from 2019 to 2025. 

Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and had a population of 190,934 as of 2020.

Tennessee:

In Tennessee, a special general election was held for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. Matt Van Epps (R) won the special election with 95,470 votes, defeating Aftyn Behn (D) and four independent candidates. Democratic and Republican primaries were held on Oct. 7, and the filing deadline passed on Aug. 12. The election was called after Mark Green (R) resigned on July 20. Green served from 2019 to 2025.

Entering the special election, the U.S. House had 213 Democrats and 220 Republicans. A majority requires 218 seats.
