Vichal Kumar (D), Antonio Reynoso (D), Claire Valdez (D), and Julie Won (D) are running in the Democratic primary for New York's 7th Congressional District on June 23, 2026. Reynoso, Valdez, and Won lead in fundraising and media attention. Incumbent Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D), who was first elected in 1992, is not running for re-election.
According to City and State NY's Rebecca C. Lewis, the dynamics of the primary "can be simplified as testing the emerging strength of [the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA)] against the more institutional left in the city." New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) endorsed Valdez, who is a member of the NYC-DSA. Velazquez endorsed Reynoso, who is not a member of the NYC-DSA.
The Queens Daily Eagle's Ryan Schwach wrote that "The race initially began as one between the democratic socialist and progressive movements, but the new fundraising numbers seem to indicate that Won, who had been seen as a spoiler to one of her competitors, may have some juice in the race to compete in the Queens-Brooklyn Congressional territory.”
The fundraising numbers Schwach referenced showed that between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2026, Won raised $644,604. During that period, Valdez raised $751,680, and Reynoso raised $630,068.
Reynoso was first elected Brooklyn Borough President in 2021. He previously represented New York City Council District 34 from 2013 to 2021 and worked as a community organizer for the New York City Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).
According to Reynoso's campaign website his priorities include "stand[ing] up to corporate interests, combat[ing] Trump's overreach and MAGA extremism, and us[ing] every tool available to abolish ICE, tax[ing] the rich, end[ing] the genocide in Gaza, and fully fund[ing] healthcare, childcare, and housing so working families can thrive.”
Valdez was elected to represent New York Assembly District 37 in 2024. She previously worked as a union organizer. Valdez served on the bargaining committee of United Auto Workers Local 2110 at Columbia University and was elected unit chair in 2022.
According to Valdez’s campaign website her priorities include “abolish[ing] ICE, fight[ing] for a free Palestine, and mak[ing] life more affordable for working people.”
Won was first elected to represent New York City Council District 26 in 2021. She previously worked at IBM, where she advised the federal government on technology modernization.
According to Won's campaign website, her priorities include "fighting for universal paid leave, affordable childcare, healthcare for all, and a care economy that values the workers who hold our families together and make all other work possible.”
As of May 5, 2026, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter and Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rated the general election as Solid Democratic. Larry J. Sabato's Crystal Ball rated it as Safe Democratic.
