Six candidates are running in the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District on Aug. 11, 2026. Kaela Berg (D), Matt Klein (D), and Matt Little (D) lead in endorsements, fundraising, and media attention. Incumbent Rep. Angie Craig (D) is running for the U.S. Senate rather than for another term.
According to CBS Minnesota's Esme Murphy, the district "is a microcosm of the whole state. There are suburban areas, including Burnsville, Eagan and Cottage Grove, as well as rural farm areas in Dakota, Scott and Le Sueur counties. It is the most evenly divided district between Democrats and Republicans in the state."
Craig, who positioned herself as a moderate during her tenure, was first elected in 2018. Before then, Republicans represented the district for 20 years. The Minnesota Star Tribune's Sydney Kashiwagi wrote that these dynamics mean that Democrats will need to decide "whether to stay with the tried and true formula in Klein, a moderate aligned with Craig's formula for winning the seat; or take a chance on the more progressive Little or Berg."
Berg was first elected to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2022. Her professional experience includes working as a flight attendant for Endeavor Air. She also served as director of the Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition.
Berg is focusing her campaign on how her life experiences have prepared her to represent the district. According to her campaign website, "Kaela is running … to fight for hardworking families because she understands the challenges our community faces firsthand. She has worked up to three jobs, bought groceries from the dollar store to feed her family, and lived without health insurance during a global pandemic." EMILY's List, End Citizens United, and the Association of Flight Attendants endorsed Berg.
Klein was first elected to serve in the Minnesota Senate in 2016. He served on the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School District, Minnesota from 2013 to 2016. Klein's professional experience includes working as a physician.
Klein is focusing his campaign on his legislative experience. According to his campaign website, "Matt has passed laws protecting Minnesotans from financial fraud and predatory lending. He has controlled the rising cost of medications by regulating the pharmaceutical industry. He has affirmed the rights of Minnesotans to make their own choices about reproductive health." State Sen. John Hoffman (D), 314 Action, and the Minnesota Pipe Trades Association endorsed Klein.
Little served in the Minnesota Senate from 2017 to 2021. He served as Mayor of Lakeville from 2013 to 2017, and on the Lakeville City Council from 2011 to 2012. Little's professional experience includes working as a lawyer.
Little is focusing his campaign on his ties to the district. His campaign website states, "I grew up in Minnesota's Second Congressional District (MN CD2), from my parents' home in Lakeville to my high school in Rosemount and my home in New Market Township. I'm fighting for my home district, and running because the American Dream shouldn't be out of reach for anyone." Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D), the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota, and National Nurses United endorsed Little.
As of June 23, 2026, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales, and Larry J. Sabato's Crystal Ball rated the general election as Likely Democratic.
Abdisallam Abdulle (D), Hugh McTavish (D), and Christopher Mosel (D) are also running in the primary.
