Democrats and Republicans both targeting Michigan state House in 2026

Elections for all 110 districts in the Michigan House of Representatives will take place on Nov. 3, 2026.

Ahead of the general elections, Republicans have a 58-52 majority in the chamber. Republicans won a majority in the chamber in 2024. Democrats need to win at least four districts in 2026 to gain control, and Republicans need to lose no more than two to maintain their majority.

Michigan is one of 11 states with a divided government ahead of the general elections. Democrats control the governorship and the Michigan Senate, while Republicans control the state House. The state has had a divided government since 2025. The last time the state had a Democratic trifecta was 2024, and the last time it had a Republican trifecta was 2018. Ballotpedia assessed a moderate possibility of either party gaining a trifecta as a result of the 2026 general elections.

Both the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) and the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) are targeting the Michigan Legislature in the 2026 general elections. Michigan is one of 30 states where both parties are targeting districts in the state legislature.

The DLCC is targeting 16 state House districts, including six Democratic-held districts and 10 Republican-held districts. The DLCC official website said, "Putting Democrats back in charge of both chambers of the legislature will provide a critical bulwark against MAGA chaos before the presidential election and let Democrats get back to work fighting for Michiganders."

The RSLC is targeting Michigan as one of the five states it said had "some of the nation's most competitive state legislative battlegrounds." The RSLC official website says, "Michigan's Republican House majority has delivered real results for hardworking families across the Wolverine State. From lowering costs and protecting jobs to backing the men and women in law enforcement, House Republicans have shown that conservative leadership gets results, even as Senate Democrats push tax-and-spend policies that leave Michiganders paying more for less."

Ballotpedia considers 23 districts to be battlegrounds. These include districts where the margin of victory (MOV) in the last general elections was within five percentage points, where a district is open, where a national organization is targeting, or where a district features a notable challenger to an incumbent. Four of the 23 districts are open, while incumbents are running in the other 19 districts. To read more about these districts, click here.

Elections are happening in 2026 for 88 of the 99 state legislative chambers across the country. In total, 6,137 of the country's 7,386 state legislative seats are up for election in 2026.
