Democrats won a majority in the Michigan House of Representatives on Nov. 3

Elections for all 110 districts in the Michigan House of Representatives took place on Nov. 3, 2026.

Following the election, Democrats gained a 63-47 majority.

Ahead of the general elections, Republicans had a 58-52 majority in the chamber. Republicans won a majority in the chamber in 2024. Democrats needed to win at least four districts in 2026 to gain control, and Republicans needed to lose no more than two to maintain their majority.

Michigan was one of 11 states with a divided government ahead of the general elections. Democrats controlled the governorship and the Michigan Senate, while Republicans controlled the state House. The state had a divided government since 2025. The last time the state had a Democratic trifecta was 2024, and the last time it had a Republican trifecta was 2018. Ballotpedia assessed a moderate possibility of either party gaining a trifecta as a result of the 2026 general elections. Because Democrats won the election for governor and maintained their Senate majority while winning a majority in the House, they gained a trifecta in Michigan.

Both the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) and the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) targeted the Michigan Legislature in the 2026 general elections. Michigan was one of 30 states where both parties targeted districts in the state legislature.

The DLCC targeted 16 state House districts, including six Democratic-held districts and 10 Republican-held districts. The DLCC official website said, “Putting Democrats back in charge of both chambers of the legislature will provide a critical bulwark against MAGA chaos before the presidential election and let Democrats get back to work fighting for Michiganders.”

The RSLC targeted Michigan as one of the five states it said had “some of the nation’s most competitive state legislative battlegrounds.” The RSLC official website said, “Michigan’s Republican House majority has delivered real results for hardworking families across the Wolverine State. From lowering costs and protecting jobs to backing the men and women in law enforcement, House Republicans have shown that conservative leadership gets results, even as Senate Democrats push tax-and-spend policies that leave Michiganders paying more for less.”

Ballotpedia considered 23 districts to be battlegrounds. These include districts where the margin of victory (MOV) in the last general elections was within five percentage points, where a district was open, where a national organization was targeting, or where a district featured a notable challenger to an incumbent. Four of the 23 districts were open, while incumbents ran in the other 19 districts. Democrats won in all 23 battleground districts.

Elections happened in 2026 for 88 of the 99 state legislative chambers across the country. In total, 6,137 of the country's 7,386 state legislative seats were up for election in 2026.
