One Texas House special election continues to runoff; the other sees a candidate win outright

Special elections for the District 79 and District 145 seats in the Texas House of Representatives were held on January 29. The race for the District 79 seat was decided outright when Democrat Art Fierro defeated two challengers with 50.8 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election night results. The race for the District 145 seat will continue on to a runoff that has yet to be scheduled by Gov. Greg Abbott (R). Democrats Christina Morales and Melissa Noriega received the first- and second-most votes, respectively, in the general election, defeating six other candidates and advancing to the runoff.

The District 79 seat became vacant after Joe Pickett (D) resigned on January 4, 2019, for health reasons. The District 145 seat became vacant after then-State Rep. Carol Alvarado (D) won election to the Texas State Senate in a special election on December 11, 2018.
