Charlotte, North Carolina, to hold primaries on Sept. 12


The primary election for Charlotte, North Carolina, is on Sept. 12, 2023. Candidates are competing to advance to the general election scheduled for Nov. 7, 2023. The filing deadline to run was on July 21, 2023.

Candidates filed for Charlotte City Council and mayor of Charlotte. Incumbent Vi Alexander Lyles (D) and Lucille Puckett (D) are running in the Democratic primary for mayor. Misun Kim (R) and Rob Yates (Libertarian) automatically advanced to the general election after their primaries were cancelled.

A primary runoff is scheduled for Oct. 10, 2023. In North Carolina, primary runoffs may take place if the winning candidate receives less than 30% of the vote, and if the second-place finisher requests a runoff.

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 16th-largest city in the U.S. by population.
