Three new candidates declare in North Carolina


Ballotpedia tracked three new state-level candidates in North Carolina between Nov. 13-19. This was two more candidates than the prior week. 

Two of those candidates are Democrats and one is a Republican. The three candidates are running for state executive offices in 2024.

Details on these candidates are below: 

  • Satana Deberry (D), currently serving as North Carolina’s 16th Prosecutorial District Attorney, is running for Attorney General of North Carolina. Deberry said, “The people of North Carolina deserve an Attorney General who is fair, firm, and consistent. An Attorney General who will go to work for them every day no matter where they come from or who they are … My life’s work has been dedicated to putting the people above politics and the people’s business first … as Attorney General of this state, that’s exactly what I will do.”
  • Luis Toledo (D) is running for North Carolina State Auditor. Toledo said, “As a former Assistant State Auditor, I am running for State Auditor because there are a number of high-risk government programs that need attention, and I want to fix that by leading new and innovative audits that will improve state operations and bring value to all North Carolinians. It is also critical that we maintain the credibility of the State Auditor’s office by providing North Carolinians with impartial audit findings, and I am committed to doing that, as I did as Assistant State Auditor.”
  • Seth Woodall (R) is running for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina. Woodall said, “I’m running for Lieutenant Governor because I believe in the strength of North Carolina’s roots and the promise of our future. From championing fiscal responsibility to ensuring our children receive the education they deserve, I’m committed to fighting for the core values that make our state great.”

Since the beginning of the year, Ballotpedia has identified 55 candidates for state-level office in North Carolina. Four hundred and thirty-seven candidates ran for state-level office in North Carolina in 2022, while 508 ran in 2020. In 2022, 178 were Democratic, while 232 were Republican. In 2020, 242 were Democratic and 235 were Republican. Nationally, Ballotpedia has tracked 679 Democrats and 828 Republicans running for state-level office in 2023, and 337 Democrats and 472 Republicans running in 2024.
