Andre Jacque, Roger Roth, and Tony Wied are running in the Republican primary for Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District on August 13, 2024.
The previous incumbent, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R), resigned on April 20, 2024. In addition to the regularly scheduled primaries and general election for a full term, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers (D) called for a special election to fill the vacancy until January 3, 2025. The special elections will take place on the same days as the regularly scheduled August 13 primaries and November 5 general election.
Various statewide and national Republican politicians have endorsed the candidates. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has endorsed Jacque. Former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (R) have endorsed Roth. Former President Donald Trump (R), U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) have endorsed Wied.
Jacque has been a member of the Wisconsin Senate since 2019. He served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 2011 to 2019 and worked as a planning coordinator for Green Bay, Wisconsin. Highlighting his legislative record, Jacque says his actions in reducing taxes, spending, and regulations improved the state’s economy. Jacque sponsored legislation that prevents the state of Wisconsin from using tax money to pay for abortions, and the group Pro-Life Wisconsin named him legislator of the year. Jacque says he supports the Second Amendment and has fought violent crime through legislation.
Roth is a captain in the Wisconsin Air National Guard and was a member of the Wisconsin Senate from 2015 to 2023. He previously served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 2007 to 2011. Reid Ribble (R) defeated Roth 48% to 32% in the 2010 Republican primary for Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District. Roth says he would focus on the U.S-Mexico border, saying, “We must build the wall and end the flow of illegal drugs and dangerous criminals.” Roth says he opposes the Biden administration’s economic policies and that he would help “stop wasteful spending, fix the broken budget process, and unleash the economy through pro-growth reforms.” Roth says he supports Israel and disapproves of the Biden administration’s foreign policy with the country, saying President Joe Biden (D) chose to “betray our strongest ally.”
Wied is a businessman who previously owned and operated a chain of gas stations in Wisconsin. In addition to receiving an endorsement from Trump, Wied describes himself as an America First political outsider, a term used to describe Trump’s platform. Wied says he would focus on the U.S-Mexico border and “prioritize finishing President Trump’s border wall, reinstituting President Trump’s Remain in Mexico Policy, and ensuring our border agents have the funding they need to do their jobs.” Highlighting his business experience, Wied says he would work to reduce the national debt and would eliminate regulations to improve Wisconsin agriculture.
As of May 24, 2024, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections with Nathan Gonzales rated the general election Solid/Safe Republican.
