In 2024, California voters decided on 842 local ballot measures on five different election dates. This is the greatest number of local ballot measures decided in California from 2014 to 2024.
Voters decided most of the ballot measures during the general election on Nov. 5, 2024, when 697 local measures were on the ballot. However, voters also decided on local measures on four other election dates in California. The election with the second most measures was on March 5, the day of the presidential primary election in the state, with 137 local measures on the ballot.
Out of the 842 local measures on the ballot in 2024, voters approved 625 (74.2%) of the measures and defeated 217 (25.7%) of them. In the previous even-numbered year, 2022, voters approved 396 (69.2%) measures and defeated 176 (30.7%).
Voters in 57 of 58 counties decided on local measures in 2024, with the greatest share decided in Los Angeles County, where 108 local measures were on the ballot. The only county that did not decide on any local ballot measures in 2024 was Mariposa County.
Of the 842 local ballot measures, 336 were related to bonds and budgets, including local school bonds. Out of the 336 measures related to bonds and budgets, 309 were local school bond measures, making up 36.6% of the total local ballot measures in California. Out of the local school bond measures, 232 were approved, and 77 were defeated.
In 2024, 35% of the measures on the local ballot were related to taxes—296 measures in all. The greatest number of tax measures were parcel taxes, with 85 of them on the local ballots, while 78 measures were sales taxes, and 62 measures were city taxes. Voters approved 60 parcel tax measures and rejected 25, while approving 61 sales tax measures and rejecting 21.
