The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a confirmation hearing for Michael Waltz for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations on July 15, 2025. At the time the hearing ended, the committee had not scheduled a meeting to vote on his nomination. Waltz must receive a majority approval vote in the committee before his nomination can be put up for a confirmation vote before the full Senate.
President Donald Trump (R) nominated Waltz on May 1, 2025. Trump said of Waltz’s nomination, “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”
Trump’s first nominee for the position, U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R), was announced on Nov. 11, 2024. Trump withdrew Stefanik from consideration on March 27, 2025. In a statement Trump said, “With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat [in the U.S. House of Representatives]. The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day. There are others that can do a good job at the United Nations. Therefore, Elise will stay in Congress, rejoin the House Leadership Team, and continue to fight for our amazing American People.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is chaired by Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho) and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) is the ranking Democratic member. To watch the full hearing, click here.
