Jena Griswold (D) defeated Hetal Doshi (D), Michael Dougherty (D), and David Seligman (D) in the Democratic primary for Colorado Attorney General on June 30, 2026.
Incumbent Phil Weiser (D) was term-limited and ran for governor. Axios' John Frank said the primary had a "packed field of top-tier candidates and ... unusually high stakes of the race as the Trump administration targets Colorado." Colorado Public Radio's Allison Sherry said the race was "a sort of three-on-one battle among the candidates, the underdogs versus Griswold." Frank said, "the winner of the party primary will start as the frontrunner for the November election."
Griswold was elected Colorado Secretary of State in 2018. She earlier practiced law and was director of the D.C. office of Gov. John Hickenlooper (D). Griswold's campaign website said she had "been standing up to Trump since day one. She held Tina Peters accountable, urged the U.S. Supreme Court to bar Trump from the presidency, and told Trump’s DOJ to take a hike when they requested Coloradans’ sensitive voter information."
Doshi was a former federal prosecutor who served as the head of the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division under President Joseph Biden (D). Doshi's campaign website said she had "spent her career in law enforcement, not politics. She's made her mark by taking on the toughest fights from tech monopolies to violent criminals. She's run big teams that have taken on the powerful and defended our rights."
Dougherty was, as of the 2026 election, the district attorney for Colorado's 20th Judicial District. Dougherty earlier worked as a local prosecutor in Manhattan and a state prosecutor in Colorado. Dougherty completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. In his response, Dougherty said, "Our next Attorney General must have a proven track record as a leader and a vision for the future of Colorado. I am the one candidate who has served as a prosecutor and leader for the Attorney General’s Office."
Seligman was, as of the 2026 election, executive director of Towards Justice, a nonprofit representing workers in litigation. Seligman earlier worked at the National Consumer Law Center. Seligman completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. In his response, Seligman said he was "the clear choice to be the people’s lawyer as Colorado Attorney General. He is the only one in this race with experience fighting for working families and the ideas we need to put the law back on our side, not corporations and politicians who’ve hijacked our system for themselves."
The most recent Republican to have, as of June 2026, won election as Colorado Attorney General was Cynthia Coffman in 2014. In 2022, Weiser defeated John Kellner (R) 54.7%–43.0%.
