Incumbent Adrian Fontes (D), Alexander Kolodin (R), and Duwayne Collier (G) are running in the general election for Arizona Secretary of State on November 3, 2026.
Fontes was elected 52.4%–47.6% in 2022. That year, Katie Hobbs (D) won the gubernatorial election 50.3%–49.6% and incumbent Mark Kelly (D) won the senatorial election 51.4%–46.5%.
In 2024, President Donald Trump (R) defeated Kamala Harris (D) 52.2%–46.7% in the presidential election in Arizona and Ruben Gallego (D) won the senatorial election 50.1%–47.7%. The last Republican to win election as Arizona Secretary of State was Michele Reagan (R) in 2014.
Fontes is an attorney and former prosecutor. He served as Maricopa County Recorder from 2016 until his election as secretary of state in 2022. Fontes' campaign website said, "As Recorder, Secretary Fontes revolutionized the election system by ensuring that every eligible Arizonan had the access they needed to vote. Adrian enhanced ballot tracking technology and increased process transparency ... Secretary Fontes is committed to preserving integrity in our elections, making voting easier for registered voters, and ensuring that Arizona’s business community has a non-partisan partner in the Secretary’s office."
Kolodin was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2022. He earlier practiced law and was involved in multiple election-related lawsuits. In a statement, Kolodin said, "Arizonans are sick and tired of Adrian Fontes' mismanagement of our election system [and are] ready for world-class elections that Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike can be proud of. ... [W]hether you're a McCain Independent, a Trump Republican, or a Goldwater Democrat, I want you to know that our campaign is about protecting every vote and there is room for you in it."
This election, along with the elections for governor and attorney general, will determine Arizona's triplex status. Democrats currently hold all three triplex offices, making Arizona a Democratic triplex. If all three Democratic incumbents are re-elected, Democrats will maintain their triplex in Arizona. If all three Republican challengers win, Republicans will gain a triplex in Arizona. A mixed outcome would result in neither party having a triplex.
The Arizona Secretary of State is responsible for overseeing the state's elections and maintaining records of business partnerships and state government actions. This is one of 26 secretary of state elections taking place in 2026. Thirty-five of 50 states hold elections for secretary of state.
