From the Archives
In 2022, voters in San Francisco, California, removed District Attorney Chesa Boudin from office two and a half years into his first term. The June 7 recall passed with 55% of voters in favor and 45% opposed. This was the second attempt to remove Boudin. Richie Greenberg, a former San Francisco mayoral candidate, led an earlier effort that fell short of the 51,325 required signatures to get the recall on the ballot.
Recall supporters said burglaries, car break-ins, and homicides had reached crisis levels under Boudin. They also cited his office’s failure to charge a repeat offender who later killed two pedestrians while driving intoxicated in a stolen car. Boudin called the recall effort politically motivated and said reform was needed because past approaches “ignored root causes of crime and perpetuated mass incarceration.”
Mayor London Breed appointed Brooke Jenkins to replace Boudin. Jenkins won a special election for the office in November 2022.
