Eight candidates advance from Durham, North Carolina, primary election


The nonpartisan primary in Durham, North Carolina, was on Oct. 10, 2023. Candidates competed to advance to the nonpartisan general scheduled for Nov. 7. The filing deadline to run was on July 21.

Candidates ran for Durham City Council At-large and mayor of Durham. There are three seats up for election on the city council. The following candidates advanced to the general: Incumbent Javiera Caballero, Incumbent Monique Holsey-Hyman, Nate Baker, Shelia Ann Huggins, Khalilah Karim, and Carl Rist.

The following candidates advanced to the mayoral general election: Leonardo Williams and Mike Woodard. Williams and Woodard advanced with 51% and 29% of the vote, respectively.

Durham is the fourth-largest city in North Carolina and the 74th-largest city in the U.S. by population.
