All candidates for School District 27J Board of Education District 3 complete Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey

Both of the candidates running in the Nov. 7, 2023, general election for School District 27J Board of Education District 3 — Melinda Carbajal (nonpartisan) and Shawna Hirter (nonpartisan) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Here are the candidates’ responses to the question: What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Carbajal:

“I am well spoken, bold, and a leader. I am not afraid of controversy, but I am level headed and prepared to collaborate with people from all walks of life. I am only 38, but I have truly lived a life full of vastly different experiences. I am a mom of 5, a CEO, and am very active in our community. I am well rounded and versed in policy governance and I am prepared to give 100% in order to ensure ALL kids have the highest quality education.”

Hirter:

“In order to be successful in this position you need to have an ear to hear. You need a willingness to listen to people of different beliefs, backgrounds, mindsets, etc. You need to be thick-skinned, as some people may not agree with or even like you. I choose to not be offended and that has helped tremendously when dealing with tense situations or difficult people.”
