Brad Briner (R), A.J. Daoud (R), and Rachel Johnson (R) are running in the Republican primary for North Carolina Treasurer on March 5, 2024.

Incumbent Dale Folwell (R) is running for governor, leaving the office open.

Briner is a former asset manager. Briner says he will improve a state pension system he says has “substantially underperformed its peers, costing North Carolina taxpayers billions of dollars each year.” Briner says his changes will include transferring authority for making investments from the state treasurer to a committee and pursuing investments that provide higher returns than the pension fund’s current portfolio.

Daoud is a business owner and former commissioner of the state lottery. Daoud says his business experience, history of working for conservative causes, and passion for protecting taxpayer money make him the best candidate.

Johnson is a former financial professional and business owner. Johnson says she “wants the people of North Carolina to know their money is being wisely invested to safeguard our future.” Johnson says she will continue Folwell’s investment strategy, saying of Briner’s proposals that “there’s always a temptation in this role to flex and try to make a risky play. It’s gotten a few folks in trouble over the years.”

Before Dale Folwell (R) won election in 2016, no Republican had served as North Carolina Treasurer since 1876.
