All candidates for Texas House of Representatives District 20 Republican primary complete Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey

Both of the candidates running in the March 5, 2024, Republican primary for Texas House of Representatives District 20 — Incumbent Terry Wilson (R) and Elva Janine Chapa (R) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Here are the candidates’ responses to the question: What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Wilson:

“Knowing the limited role of government. Adam Smith, the father of Capitalism, said the four legitimate purposes of government were:

1. Provide for national security and public safety

2. Enforce contracts

3. Provide infrastructure

4. Maintain a strong currency

In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson stated that governments are instituted among men to protect ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’

If it isn’t on one of those lists, the government should stay out of it.”

Chapa:

“Transparency and honesty. Voters deserve the truth delivered directly and in a straightforward fashion. They may not like what they hear but we must remain transparent and let them remain a part of this process. No more making our voters feel like , ‘ They can’t handle the truth.’ ”
