Ten states to decide education-related measures this November
This November, voters in 10 states will decide 11 statewide education-related ballot measures—the most since 2018. In Monday’s Brew, we previewed a few education measures to watch in Colorado, Florida, and Massachusetts that deal with private school choice, partisan school board elections, and standardized testing.
Michigan Supreme Court elections will determine whether Democrats or Republicans control the Court
On Wednesday, we previewed the general elections for Michigan’s Supreme Court on Nov. 5. Four candidates are running for two seats on the Court.
According to the Associated Press, “Democratic-backed justices currently hold a 4-3 majority. Republican victories in both races would flip control of the Court, while two Democratic wins would yield a 5-2 supermajority.”
Michigan is one of 33 states holding state supreme court elections in 2024. In total, 82 of the 344 seats on state supreme courts are up for election.
New Hampshire gubernatorial election rated a Toss-Up
On Friday, we looked at the New Hampshire gubernatorial election on Nov. 5. Joyce Craig (D), Kelly Ayotte (R), and Stephen Villee (L) are running in the general election. Incumbent Chris Sununu (R) did not seek re-election.
This election will help determine New Hampshire’s trifecta and triplex statuses. A state government trifecta means one party controls a state’s governorship and majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. A state government triplex means the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state are all members of the same political party.
As of Oct. 8, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales, and Larry J. Sabato’s Crystal Ball all rated the election a Toss-Up.
