Minnesota House of Representatives elections could change the state’s Democratic trifecta

General elections for the Minnesota House of Representatives will take place on Nov. 5, 2024.

All 134 seats are up for election. Democrats hold a 68-64 majority in the chamber, with two vacancies. Democrats have controlled the House since 2019.

According to the MinnPost, House Democrats are campaigning on legislation they passed since the party gained control of Minnesota Senate in 2023, while Republicans are campaigning on balancing political control of the Minnesota Legislature. House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D) says she believes the Legislature faced gridlock when control was split between chambers. House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth (R) says she believes Democratic control of the Legislature and governorship has been detrimental to Minnesota.

Both parties have set fundraising records in 2024, with the Democratic caucus raising $5.5 million and the Republican caucus raising $1.8 million as of Sept. 25.

Ballotpedia identified 34 battleground districts. Democrats represent 17 of these districts and Republicans represent 17. Incumbents are running in 28 of these races, while the other six are in open districts, meaning no incumbents are running. To read more about the battleground elections, click here.

One incumbent lost in a primary. Twenty incumbents did not seek re-election, a 50% decrease from the 40 incumbents who retired in 2022.

Minnesota is one of 17 states that has a Democratic trifecta, since Democrats control the governorship and both legislative chambers. The outcome of this election could change Minnesota’s trifecta status. If Republicans gain a majority in the House, the state would have a divided government. Ballotpedia identified Minnesota’s Democratic trifecta as moderately vulnerable. To read more about trifecta vulnerability in the 2024 elections, click here.

The Minnesota House of Representatives is one of 85 state legislative chambers with elections in 2024 across 99 chambers throughout the country. The primaries were held on Aug. 13, 2024.
