Washington, D.C.’s Nov. 5, 2024, general election ballot will feature three presidential candidates and their running mates. They are:
- Kamala Harris / Tim Walz (D)
- Donald Trump / J.D. Vance (R)
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. / Nicole Shanahan (Independent)
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew from the presidential election in August, but will still appear on Washington, D.C.’s ballot.
There are three fewer candidates on Washington, D.C.’s presidential ballot compared to 2020. In 2020, Washington, D.C.’s ballot had six candidates: Joe Biden (D), Trump, Jo Jorgensen (L), Howie Hawkins (G), and two other minor party candidates. Biden won Washington, D.C., that year with 92.1% of the vote, followed by Trump with 5.4%, Jorgensen with 0.6%, and Hawkins with 0.5%.
As of Oct. 28, The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball all rated the district as solid Democratic. Washington, D.C., was first able to cast electoral votes in presidential elections beginning in 1964. In the 15 presidential elections since, the Democratic candidate has won the district in each election.
Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes, tied with six states for the fewest electoral votes. Washington, D.C., neither gained nor lost electoral votes following the 2020 census, since its electoral vote count is fixed at three by the 23rd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
