Throughout February, Ballotpedia covered 346 elections in 15 states, 32% of which were uncontested. The rate has increased since January when 24% of the 25 covered were uncontested.

Ballotpedia defines an uncontested election as one where the number of candidates running is less than or equal to the number of seats up for election. This analysis does not account for write-in candidates.
In February, Ballotpedia covered the most elections in Illinois and Wisconsin. Of the 102 elections covered in Illinois, 21% were uncontested, while in Wisconsin, 40% of the 125 elections covered were uncontested.
No uncontested elections were found in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, and Maine; however, Ballotpedia’s coverage in each of these states was limited to between one and three elections. Similarly, all covered elections in Nebraska and Washington were found uncontested, but the sample of elections in each state was between one and three.

February’s rate of uncontested elections was less than the 64% average rate identified between 2018 and 2024. It also brings the year-to-date uncontested elections rate to 32%.
For comparison, since 2018, each year has had more uncontested than contested elections except for one, in 2021, when 50.4% of the elections Ballotpedia covered were contested.
