State supreme courts saw five new announced vacancies in the second quarter of 2023. The vacancies occurred in Connecticut, Florida, New York, Hawaii, and Idaho. Added to the eight announced vacancies from the first three months of 2023, the total announced state supreme court vacancies so far this year is 13.

Of the 13 announced vacancies, four justices have yet to vacate their seat, seven have vacated and been replaced, and two have vacated but have not been replaced. Nine justices retired or plan to retire in 2023, three elevated to a federal judgeship, and one ascended to a chief judge position.

Six vacancies are in states where a Democratic governor appoints a replacement. Seven vacancies are in states where a Republican governor appoints the replacement.
