54.98% of state legislators are Republican, 44.38% Democratic


At the end of May 2024, 54.98% of all state legislators in the United States are Republican while 44.38% are Democratic. There are 7,386 state legislative seats in the country.

Republicans control 56 chambers, while Democrats hold 41. Two chambers (Alaska House and Alaska Senate) were organized under multipartisan, power-sharing coalitions.

Democrats hold 847 state Senate seats and 2,431 state House seats, overall losing two seats since last month. Republicans hold 1,115 state Senate seats and 2,946 state House seats, overall gaining two seats.

Independent or third-party legislators hold 23 seats across ten different states, including 19 state House seats and four state Senate seats. There are 17 vacant state House seats and seven vacant state Senate seats across 16 different states.

Compared to May 2023, Democrats have lost seven state Senate seats (854 v. 847) and have gained 11 state House seats (2,420 v. 2,431). Republicans have gained four state Senate seats (1,111 v. 1,115) and lost one House seat (2,947 v. 2,946).
