Iowa’s Nov. 5, 2024, general election ballot will feature seven presidential candidates and their running mates. They are:
- Kamala Harris / Tim Walz (D)
- Donald Trump / J.D. Vance (R)
- Chase Oliver / Mike ter Maat (L)
- Claudia De La Cruz / Karina Garcia (Party for Socialism and Liberation)
- William P. Stodden / Stephanie H. Cholensky (Socialist Party)
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. / Nicole Shanahan (We the People)
- Shiva Ayyadurai / Crystal Ellis (Independent)
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., running as an independent, withdrew from the presidential election in August, but will still appear on Iowa’s ballot as a We the People candidate.
This is the fewest candidates on Iowa’s presidential ballot since at least 2008. In 2020, Iowa’s ballot had nine candidates: Donald Trump (R), Joe Biden (D), Jo Jorgensen (L), Ye (Unaffiliated), Howie Hawkins (G), and four other minor party candidates. Trump won Iowa that year with 53.1% of the vote, followed by Biden with 44.9%, Jorgensen with 1.2%, and Ye and Hawkins each with 0.2%. No other candidate received more than 0.1% of the vote.
As of Oct. 21, The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated the state as solid Republican and Inside Elections rated the state as likely Republican. In the last 10 presidential elections, the Democratic candidate won the state in six elections and the Republican candidate won the state four times.
Iowa has six electoral votes, tied with five other states for the 30th most. Following the 2020 census, Iowa neither gained nor lost electoral votes.
