Five presidential tickets will appear on the ballot in Maine this November


Maine’s Nov. 5, 2024, general election ballot will feature five presidential candidates and their running mates. They are:

Maine is one of two states, along with Alaska, that will use ranked-choice voting in the 2024 presidential election. Maine is also one of two states, along with Nebraska, that does not allocate its electoral votes using a winner-take-all system. Instead, Maine awards two of its electors to the candidate who wins a plurality of the statewide vote, while the remaining electors are allocated to the winners of the plurality vote in each of Maine’s congressional districts.

There are the same number of candidates on Maine’s presidential ballot compared to 2020, and one more than in the three elections held between 2008 and 2016. In 2020, Maine’s ballot had five candidates: Joe Biden (D), Trump, Jo Jorgensen (L), Howie Hawkins (G), and one other minor party candidate. Biden won Maine that year with 53.1% of the vote, followed by Trump with 44.0%, Jorgensen with 1.7%, and Hawkins with 1.0%. No other candidate received more than 1% of the vote.

Maine awards two electoral votes to the statewide winner and one electoral vote to the winner in each congressional district. As of Oct. 29, The Cook Political Report, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections rated the state as likely Democratic. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated Maine’s 1st Congressional District as solid Democratic and Inside Elections rated the state as likely Democratic. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated Maine’s 2nd Congressional District as likely Republican and Inside Elections rated the state as lean Republican. The Democratic candidate won the statewide vote in Maine in each of the last eight presidential elections.  

Maine has four electoral votes, tied with six other states for the 2nd fewest electoral votes. Maine neither gained nor lost electoral votes following the 2020 census.
