South Dakota’s Nov. 5, 2024, general election ballot will feature four presidential candidates and their running mates. They are:
- Kamala Harris / Tim Walz (D)
- Donald Trump / J.D. Vance (R)
- Chase Oliver / Mike ter Maat (L)
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. / Nicole Shanahan (Independent)
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew from the presidential election in August, but will still appear on South Dakota’s ballot.
There is one more candidate on South Dakota’s presidential ballot compared to 2020 and the same number of candidates as in the 2012 and 2016 elections. In 2020, South Dakota’s ballot had three candidates: Joe Biden (D), Trump, and Jo Jorgensen (L). Trump won South Dakota that year with 61.8% of the vote, followed by Biden with 35.6%, and Jorgensen with 2.6%.
As of Oct. 27, The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball all rated the state as solid Republican. South Dakota was carried by the Republican presidential nominee in every election between 1968 and 2020; the last Democrat to carry the state was in 1964.
South Dakota has three electoral votes, tied with five other states and Washington, D.C., for the fewest electoral votes. South Dakota neither gained nor lost electoral votes following the 2020 census.
South Dakota’s general election ballot will also feature seven ballot measures and elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, other state executive offices, and the South Dakota State Senate, among others.
